ECOTOURISM

Dear fellow friends, first of all I want to congratulate Miss Lim Jo Lene for scoring all A's and the rest for doing so well in their SPM (thank God its over).

Ok. I NEED YOUR HELP(s)!
I am currently doing my CCA project on ECOTOURISM for my world issue subject in college. Its about ECOTOURISM. It'll be nice if you all can leave your point of views on Ecotourism in Malaysia. heee =D

What is Ecotourism?
Ecotourism is = Tourism involving travel to areas of natural or ecological interest, typically under the guidance of a naturalist, for the purpose of observing wildlife and learning about the environment.

E.g - Visiting Taman Negara, Batang Ai in Sarawak.

  • Ecotourism is often trumpeted as a way to save wildlife but what about rural people?
  • Ecotourism is to give a chance to urban people to keep in touch with nature.
  • Ecotourism is destroying the wildlifes (poluted by tourism).
  • Ecotourism industry plays a role in the country's economy status.
  • Ecotourism is <> ???

Is it good or bad? In what forms? Any questions? Fell free to shoot!

This is just the begining, please argue among one another about this issue and leave your point of views in the comment box below.

IF YOU ARE NOT A BLOGGER, NVM! set Anonymous as your identity, leave your text together with your name at the comment box. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH! =D <3

hmm...ecotourism....
Hmm.. I would incline more towards the negative side of it.. I mean look at Cameron HIghlands for the past few years, the temperature has gone up significantly...
Instead of making it more of a tourist area, I think it has actually loss the qualities that made it a tourist spot to begin with

hey, regarding this issue, i agree with the fellow b4 me, my grandad lives in Cameron Highlands, and hell yes the temperature has gone up. comparing it to 10 yrs back.. its freakin hot. it still has its nature stuff like waterfalls and all that, but it has really changed over the years, its becoming more of a tourist spot with the hotels coming up and all. they even have cyber cafes there now ! yea. so i too would incline more towards the negative side of it. cheers. ecotourism has both it's pros and cons... the pro and con dat i would highlight would be, it's good cause it plays a role in the economy status...and the bad one is because it causes pollution to these places... However, put it this way, the consequences of pollution causes higher death rates and health problems, and if still the country's economy is put as the main priority more than it's citizen and the environment, then i guess we dont deserve to live at all. Meaning, i disagree wif ecotourism because if this were to continue, yeah now we don't really see the effects of it, but what say you, in 20 years down the road, these places would be badly polluted and abandoned cause it wont be an ecotourism spot anemore...AND why should it be this way? because of money?

ecotourism is always misused as a marketing tool to promote tourism that is very much related to nature. disturbing the habitat will then lead to extinction of certain species of animals and plants. when i say disturbing the habitat meaning building hotels, etc etc as someone mentioned earlier.

ecotourism can promote the country and make it profitable to keep natural habitats of endangered species.

my thoughts:

Tourism generally doesnt take into account the impact of human activity to the eco-system.

For example, take the Marine Park near Redang. A steady stream of tourists who do not really knoe what not to do have left the coral beds there all destroyed.

However eco-tourism is not a bad thing, its supposed to bring awareness to tourists about nature after all.

The actual purpose of the whole eco-tourism thing is to promote responsible, sustainable travelling.

Thing is eco-tourism loses out to regular plain tourism in the economic sense. Why? Its harder to run (alot of regulations to obey), less popular ( tourists may have to do without alot of modern facilities ).

So the idea is good, but execution is hard. unless more is done to help the industry.. i guess its impact on the world is limited lor.

There .. cheers

Ecotourism was supposed to be a good thing after all. Alot of people talk of ecotourism but talking and practising is two different things alltogether.

First and foremost, it was suppose to bring a total adverse effect compared to traditional tourism. It was suppose to make things better. However, things seemed to be on a different track. Mike Merg quoted that 'A walk through the rainforest is NOT ecotourism UNLESS that particular walk somehow benefits that environment and the people who live there'. I couldn't agree more.

Ecotourism is an overly mis-used term in tourism. And alot are doing the talking but not walking them. There isn't enough exposure of responsible ecotourism. Recycling, re-using water are some of the terms we are so familiar with but have you played your part to make a change?

Yea.. All talk no action..
So does it mean that. If we go touring with giving benefits to the ecosystem, that is only called ecotourism? cool.. thats new!
anybody disagree?? why??

I'm not saying its either bad or good. IT can be bad and it can be good.. bad in the sense of destroying wildlife and nature and good in the sense it brings awareness to the tourist.

Ecotourism, places like Cameron definitely not "environmentally" healthy anymore..its shudnt be this way. It shud be as natural as it can be, untouched tropical rainforest, etc. what we can do now is to preserve it, naturalist n environmentalist will make sure of it but they need fund, tourists can see the wonders of it, but always stick to the nature. not for your own comfort, u destroy what that is supposed to be protected.

Ecotourism is about connecting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel.

-minimize impact
-build environmental and cultural awareness and respect
-provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts
-provide direct financial benefits for conservation
-provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people
-raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate

Imo, ecotourism in Malaysia is doing a great job. However, the only thing that is bringing down ecotourism in our country is our people themselves. For instance, during a picnic/jungle trekkin event, some people tend to litter.

I feel that the responsible authority should stand up with stricter rules and implement them. As they said, action speaks louder than words. Besides them, they should organize more activities to get people to participate in ecotourism activities.

ah suet, so far this far oni lar. Brain jammed d :P

hmmm...ecotourism can take NZ as example since the whole country itself is inclined to nature. The local don't like outsiders to come in. Why? because outsiders dirty the country. At the same time NZ Govt is bringing people in. Why? for $$$.
So after earning $$, they have to give some out to maintain this 'beautiful' country, its only fair. Even if the Govt don't do anything, the people themselves will.
Whereas in Cameron and other parts of M'sia(not only in m'sia, same goes to most asian countries, take hk for example..even worse parts of china), no one is doing anything to keep up its maintanence. The people... 'u wish'?
I guess the Key Word here is balance. After trashing some place, some1 needs to put it back together or else... it becomes like Cameron Highland lor

Ecotourism, meaning that we had left our footprint on a particular place.
Just look at earth, how bad is it compared to last time? Earth was a beautiful place that is green and blue in colour. But, it seems to be more brownish these days. My point here is that whatever human does, it makes things worse for nature. As what other are saying, such as Cameron Highlands, etc, is all good facts to prove that human are self centered.
